The first few months when I started working at my full-time job, I came across a few terminologies that I’ve never heard of before. I was kind of shocked, honestly, because I didn’t realize that the words used in the workplace were so different from the words used in the university setting.
There were words that most people with common sense would understand, but I didn’t know what they meant until further clarification.
Also, one interesting thing came to mind. In the university setting, I hated working on group projects because I never knew if my classmates were going to follow through with their tasks.
But here?
I was quite surprised to see that people take their roles seriously and I love that. Although the workplace is a collaboration-based space, it functions so differently from my experience in university.
I am sharing the following terminology so that if you come across them at your first job, you wouldn’t be so surprised. Some of these are fairly easy to understand, but at the time that I started, it wasn’t so obvious.
- Sunset = To cancel or terminate something. Most likely used to refer to a project or initiative your company may have started.
- High-level = Very brief description, detail, or information about a project that contains only the important details and doesn’t delve into the specifics.
- Copy or Content = This is used interchangeably, but copy is more directly related to the text that is used in marketing materials whereas content is referred to a group of text that makes up an article, email, web page, etc.
- Language = Used interchangeably with copy and content.
- 10-4 = Confirmed or received. Usually used when someone wants to say they have received or confirmed receipt of something like an email or letter etc.
- s/b = Should be.
- OOTO = Out of the office and it means exactly what it says.
- NFT = No further text. Usually used in subject lines to indicate that the sender has no further text in the body of the email.
If you have further terms you’re aware of and would like to contribute, please comment below or send me an email! I’ve love to build this out for everyone in the community to use.
