Should I Be Looking for a Job While I Have a Job?

November 21, 2020

One of the things I worry about the most when I’m job hunting is not being able to find a job.

This feeling is crazy. And it’s scary. The whole world feels dark, gloomy, and sad. This is why now that I have my job, I learned I need to constantly be looking for a job.

Active and Passive Job Search

There are two types of job searches: active and passive.

Even though I have my job, I’m constantly on the lookout for the next opportunity.

This is known as passive job searching.

Passive job searching is what I’m doing. I’m not looking to “leave” my company per se, but I’m always looking to keep my skills sharp by learning new things, taking on new responsibilities, and staying on top of my field.

Active job searching, on the other hand, is when you’re always actively looking for a job. You’re applying to jobs online and sending out resumes. You keep your resume up-to-date, your networks top-notch, and your ears perked for new findings or resources in your field.

The difference between a passive and active job search is that in a passive job search, you’re not handing out your resumes and you’re not planning to change jobs. But you’re always keeping your eyes and ears open for the next opportunity.

In other words, even though I’m not planning to leave my job, I’m always keeping my ears sharp for exciting new opportunities that I want to pursue.

The Number One Thing You Should Always Do In a Job Search

Regardless of whether you’re passively or actively job searching, there’s always one thing you need to do: keep your resume up-to-date. You never know when the right opportunity will come knocking on the door.

Make sure to polish that resume on LinkedIn or whatever system you use to create your resume and update it every few months.

As you learn new skills or take on new responsibilities, update the resume to reflect these new milestones.
